A Bit of Everything Lately Run Down

The days absolutely fly by when you are far from finished on your crafting Christmas list I am afraid! BUT last night remedied a large portion of the time crunch problem – we had a Wrap-o-palooza at Kristen and Fydo’s to get a lovely chunk of my finished gifts out of the way! I am so happy we got what I had of the kids’ gifts and a few random others wrapped and set aside. I am so thankful for Kristen’s help AND that she let me take advantage of her massive roll of wrapping paper! I am still going to have to buy a roll myself for the rest of my presesnts but a much smaller amount than I originally needed and it will take a lot less time to get them done and out of the way! On top of that, Ken and Fydo got some gaming time and Echo got to be the center of attention at a friend’s house. We had He Chris to babysit and the big kids were asleep by the time we got home!

Echo "helping"

The two days before that we kept busy at home! One afternoon I cleared the blue table… washed everyone down, tied back Trinity’s hair and gave the kids sugar cookie dough, some flour and cookie cutters. A double batch of dough and I didn’t cut out a single cookie! They did brilliant and only a small amount of dough ended up on the floor (crumbs) and an equally small amount of flour ended up on the kids!

Making cookies!

The next afternoon we painted our Model Magic ornaments. I have some of the Crayola glitter stuff you add to paint and gave each kid a brush, some paint and walked away! We didn’t do too badly. ALL the ornaments got painted, one shirt tossed (it had a hole in it already so the red paint just put the final nail in the coffin) and all 4 kids were rightfully proud of themselves. We had to leave them overnight to be sure the paint dried and add the final touch – a ribbon to hang them on a tree with.

More sparkly than they look here

The twins and I battled it out BUT we finished our snowflake lapbooks… AND Gavin sat through (without crying) a re-write on a story he had misplaced. We printed off one of those sheets where there is a beginning part and then you wrote the rest. We got ours HERE

Lots of snowflake knowledge here!

I have been working on a duct tape present for a family member and made errors with a couple of my strips. I was able to salvage one for the project and the other got cut down and set aside. Emanuel claimed that one for a bracelet and I had to make Trinity her own out of the purple duct tape I have in the house. They are so proud of their new finery! All I did was fold the strip in half (lengthwise) to make it one inch and then put on velcro circles. Result – happy children for pennies!

I have posted TWO owls to my Etsy store. Both Christmas themed and hopefully adorable to someone OTHER than me! I did a mini photo shoot in our Christmas tree for fun, of course, of both.

Christmas Owl

We have totally gotten into our Christmas themed stuff. There is a fun printouton Education.com to make little cards and envelopes. We went onto EnchantedLearning and printed off some Christmas themed early reader books and plan on hunting around for some Christmas themed math sheets. Gavin has excelled at moving up to adding two two digit numbers and dealing with results over 100. We have not broached subtracting with 100 yet but I don’t see that as being too far off. I have been told Education.com will have more Christmas themed sheets up presently but with Thanksgiving in the states being yesterday (a belated Happy Thanksgiving to you all) their focus was firmly on themed sheets for that event.

Coloured cars

The focus of the boys is firmly on their remote control cars sadly. They each (the twins) sacrificed an extra week of allowance to get batteries for their cars. So now all they want to do is play with them. Not the quietest or CALMEST indoor entertainment AND they tend to sneak off when I am busy with one thinking I wouldn’t notice the inevitable car driving sounds…

Remote control cars

I have some lovely craft supplies send from a friend who was downsizing her crafting area this week! I am so blessed that other people have extras of what we need more of lately!

Thank You!

Zander also spent some time making a hand pupped to entertain Echo with! I had to help with the antlers but it was all his idea!

My kitchen table is officially a danger zone at this point. So much crafting supplies out and no chance to them going away any time soon. I am certain there is more I could share from the past few days but the combination of late night crafting, strong willed children and Christmas plans have completely turned my brain to mush!!! So off I go back to the crafting and hope that Trinity winds down and goes to sleep BEFORE midnight!

Tree fairie

We Trick-or-Treated With Great Energy

Our Halloween has come and gone and with it a day to remember. It started bright and early with the appearance of Cousin Veronika with chocolate scones in tow. The kids were VERY excited… there was art to give her and stories that just HAD TO be read. Echo has grown quite accustomed to her now as well so it was a welcome break for me off and on all day. Have I mentioned how spoiled I am getting being so close to such amazing family?

We made a run to the convenience store with the kids’ allowance. I do believe we thoroughly entertain the convenience store employees when I come (even with a helping hand) with all 5 kids in tow. What amazes me is how different each kid is with their money. Trinity doesn’t understand how much she has and just wants a slurpee (mommy DID foot the extra 9 cents), Zander took his time thinking and spent it ALL on a bag of chips, Gavin wanted a slurpee and had enough from the left overs from last time and Emanuel.. bought 5 nickel candies and still hasn’t TOUCHED this week’s allowance!!

Time to go and spend allowance

I was VERY appreciative to have an extra set of hands helping me get all 5 kids ready (and myself for that matter). Ken had to work right until quarter to 4 and then hop into the shower so I would have been on my own otherwise. Since we had our resident make-up artist here there was some additions done to two of the costumes and yours truly got her pretty face on. I was amazed that Trinity not only let us put the make up on but was able to NOT rub at it until the very end of the night. Veronika used a water based make-up that was easy to clean off.

Becoming Hello Kitty

Gotta have that black ring-tailed lemur nose

All 3 of the adults dressed up. Veronika was a zombie complete with fake blood. Ken did his impression of a rather hairy pirate and yours truly was told she was a princess this year by the kids. Gotta get as much use out of the dress as possible right? I forgot how heavy that thing is, but warm!!

Here you can see our completed Kitty AND our zombie cousin

In costume and at the mall

We actually managed to stay on track time wise and were out the door before 4:30 to find… HAIL! Just temporary and not overly cold but right when I took the pictures of the kids out front of course.

In the hail... so not the most organized photo

Then it was off to the first of the two malls in town. One started at 4pm and was closer to us anyway so we bundled everyone up into the van and Veronika’s vehicle (girls in one boys in the other) and off we went. Thankfully the stroller fits easily in the back of hers so we were good to go. Echo even did some trick or treating, but could only take Petite Sheepette. Fat Sheep was too… well you see where I am going with this!

Little Bo Peep and her smaller sheep... and itty bitty candy bag

The mall was rather packed and lots of places were handing out candy, there was even some games! And some highly inappropriate employee (female) costumes, but nothing too extreme…

Playing one of the games

After doing the rounds at that mall it was time to pack back up and head to the next. This one is newer and further south but along our way to Fydo and Kristen’s. There we met up with Karyn, Lauralee and Victoria halfway through. Apparently though the mall had advertised their hours of trick or treating at 5-7 here people showed up at 3 which meant a lot of the places were already out of candy but the kids did not do too badly!

With the ladies

After we finished our second mall we had been out for around 2 hours already and it was time to head further south to Kristen and Fydo’s neighbourhood. So we said good-bye to the ladies and continued on, took a wrong turn but made our destination. Kristen had already left for her work out but we were able to have our pee break and a brief visit with Fydo before doing one of their closes and half of another street. I think it was another hour later of what the kids term “real trick or treating” before we called it quits. Trinity was tired but once she realized she got to RING DOORBELLS! Well she was off! When we got home she wanted to do one more house so we went next door with 3 of the 4 (Gavin said his feet hurt and he was DONE) and then undressed and relaxed for the night.

Fydo and crowd... didn't have time to make the camera like it being night as everyone was done. But notice, our Little Bo Peep started the night as a girl and turned into a pumpkin!

There was a mountain of candy to go through and 4 VERY worn out and happy kids… so after some defrosted fruit in bowls and a candy each and a  thorough tooth brushing it was BEDTIME. What a great day! And they did relatively well listening to directions. YAY.

Last one to fall asleep... fell asleep book in hand

This morning we woke up to excited and slightly out of sorts kids but with careful maintaining of NOT gorging on sweets and not pushing too much organized learning we made it through somewhat unscathed… well until Echo got into the chocolates bag where I forgot there was a couple chocolates you could TWIST OPEN… which she DID and popped in her mouth. So Echo has had her first chocolate… well most of it as we took it away and gave her some bits… now to wait until tomorrow to see if it upset her any. I know what SHE thought about it… she is her mother’s daughter!

Chocy face

We did finish up our Halloween worksheets. I had some from last year that were stationary paper with a Halloween theme. So the twins each wrote out a sentence stating what their favourite part of Halloween this year was. The other was a printout from education.com. The Creative Writing page. They had to read each partial sentence themselves and then we talked about an answer which I wrote out for them on scrap paper to write out themselves. For the younger two I wrote their answers for them, but it was a great way to end our interest in Halloween (that and packing up all the decorations).

In the afternoon it was relatively warm so 3 of the kids went out to enjoy the sunshine. We are definitely going to have to start working on mittens and hats, pack up the sandals and either get Trinity into pants or buy her some tights.

Note the hail/frost stuff still there even in the late afternoon with the shade

We had a visitor in our yard as well – a rather pretty grey cat that the kids thought was the most amazing thing around.

Being as today was Tuesday and Karyn was able to get here before 6:30 we took Trinity and Emanuel to their weekly pj storytime at the library. It was all about feet and they danced the hokey pokey… sort of. Trinity thought it was the funniest thing ever. The craft was colouring bodies and feet of animals and gluing the right ones together.

Library Hokey Pokey

We had one casualty of Halloween, apparently when the ladies got to our house to start handing out candy they found our jack’o’lantern, in pieces! Someone smashed it! Poor poor pumpkin.

So our Halloween did not go according to the original plan BUT we made the best of the back up plan. Family, friends, trick or treating, costumes… we had it all! And while I still want to get our family to my mom’s very soon we do have to wait until the van really is reliable! In the meantime… anyone interested in visiting? Well come on over!

Two teeth and a little bread in the side of her mouth

Best Zander and Echo picture yet! And he got her up there and down again safely all by himself!

Awesome-ness of Duct/Duck Tape and Other Truths

Ok so this morning again reinforces that Minecraft and computer gaming in general is an evil evil thing when it comes to our boys. Granted they HAD earned a great deal of  time with their helping feeding Echo and doing laundry and generally cleaning up after themselves (that is a long road to even NEAR perfection), but it is frustrating to deal with turns and timing and all the rest of the things that come with ONE computer and 3 excited little boys.

Emanuel in his own little world... literally and figuratively

I had to have Ken clean up the backyard a bit (we have an issue with the garbage being torn open by animals… Ken is hoping to build a box of some sort to contain it as all the owners suggested was that we put it out back. Sadly we have a lot of food scrap garbage along with the diapers which seem to draw the animals… back to Freecycle and the hope of finding some reclaimed wood to use. After he managed to tidy up the backyard I sent the boys out to play for a bit. Trinity did a sort of abortive bug spray, run around turn back and go inside sort of thing.

Running the gambit

Instead she went into her room and started a lovely session of shopping and cash register play that the big boys eventually joined. I am not sure how much proper change was made as I took advantage of the distraction to help Emanuel with his Dora book completion but you could hear the fun being had!

Playing store

We are attempting to start with allowance this week. I am hoping that with the incentive of getting a small amount of money (1.00 per twins, 50 cents per little one) they may be quicker to follow instructions and less likely to say I can’t (I do hate the word CAN’T). We have marked off 7 days on the calendar and we will see how it goes! I am really hoping this works as I would love to see them have a GOOD week with a wonderful reward at the end (though we may have to cheat and instead of 50 cents for the little ones just buy them slurpees…).

Now I am sure you are all on pins and needles to know how Stuart is doing… well apparently he is well versed in bus usage as well as intent to become a sailor (but just across the pond). This is about the first time when what Trinity went downstairs to have Ken draw actually was somewhat close to what went on – her mouse is DRIVING the bus (it must be a toy bus) but a but and mouse ARE involved! And more importantly, she was happy with the end result!

Another chapter for Stuart Little

Today was a rather good day for our Miss T. Today her promised post wedding “good flowergirl” gift came from eBay – a Hello Kitty bracelet… very delicate in look and probably materials but she loves it and will enjoy it for as long as it is in on piece. And best part – it was like 2.00!

All shiny and kitty

I made a great find at our local 24 hr convenience store – their Ragu is only 3.29! I had run out of my usual sauce – made from scratch but oh well and wanted noodles… ok and a slurpee… so I thought why not… I am so glad I did. They even had just tomato sauce for 1.99 or 1.09… I wanted quick and simple. Flashes back to university and “cheap dinners.”

We put up our felt leaves for all to see in the front window. I am very happy with the end result. We used some tiny suction cups with plastic hooks a friend had gifted us ages ago. Felt from our felt stash, floss from my personal stash (and needles from the same) and this was a very enjoyable and affordable craft. Seriously – try it out!!!

Leaves in the window

Which brings me to ANOTHER craft activity all full of awesome… I have purchased, over the last couple weeks, a couple rolls of duct tape – we are up to one of white, another of digital camo and a third of traditional grey. I have officially decided these are NOT enough colours!!! I think I have found another addiction to go with my ribbon collection. And the best part is that this is something the kids could really get into as well – duct tape can have a million uses after all.

So I made a run out with Karyn to the Dollarama – without my list (gasp) which was sucky BUT I managed to get some bits and pieces for those projected Christmas projects. That means that with a couple other runs to other places I SHOULD be able to start sharing my crafts on here as well! With fall pretty much here I figure it is time to get back to crafting. The boys are excited to be lending a hand as part of their schooling. I have already made up a pretty good list (after all I DO love a good list) of all the people we plan to gift this Christmas… hopefully I don’t have to add too many to it as time goes on.

But it is now time to get back to crafting, cleaning and all that other fun stuff. I need to clear a path to my rubbermaid tub of sewing supplies so I can make up a wall hanging for Trinity to put her hair things up on. Fingers crossed I have a big enough piece of fabric in storage to fit the canvas! I already have Echo’s set aside. Be sure to check Fat Sheep’s sitefor updates! I am told she had a new one yesterday.

Our popcorn gnome went under cover to become a rule breaker and stand up in her highchair under the guise of being a Trinity!!!!
