Mosasaur/Mosasaurus

Well we are still averaging a dinosaur or prehistoric animal a week. Dinosaur Train HERE has become an amazing resource for finding those interesting creatures we have yet to cover. I have to say, I love how vocabulary building the world of the prehistoric is… all of the kids are rather clear (minus Echo) on what carnivore is and quick to describe what features differentiate between close species.

The Mosasaur was an interesting one. Again we found it on our Dinosaur Train list. Their site has a great section dedicated to going through each of the dinosaurs covered on the show in some detail. Their field guide HERE. You will have to look through them to find our specific dinosaur of the day!

We had a few links of interest all about this aquatic carnivore. This lizard was a top ocean predator which were thought to have evolved from snake like lizards that left the land and returned to the ocean…

Utahraptor

Yup still got these old Dino posts… enjoy the flashback to resources once used!

3 guesses where this dinosaur was found… and the first two don’t count! Yup, found in the 90’s in Utah, USA, this bipedal carnivore is thought to be one of the largest raptors. One of the dromaeosaurs, this lightweight dinosaur was potentially a warm blooded dinosaur and more like a mammal than most. I had a special sheet for us to fill in information about this carnivore from Activity Village HERE. With razor sharp teeth and massive claws this predator was quite the fearsome creature found in the Cretaceous period.

Suchomimus

Process is being made on catching up… but first… a look WAAAAY back at another dinosaur.

We are enjoying the unusual dinosaurs lately. Suchomimus is another of these. This “crocodile mimic” is a carnivore and a piscivore (fish eater… a new term for us!!). This Cretaceous period predator was found in Africa. Only one incomplete skeleton has been found. It had long front arms to grab fish, a long snout and large claws… like a crocodile that could walk on two legs!!
