Styracosaurus

Another waaaaay back when resource post. Hopefully all live links and helpful to someone! Emanuel has been such a helpful push to make me research some very interesting creatures:

Back to the dinosaurs… this time a rather interesting herbivore called the Styracosaurus. Walking on 4 legs, this dinosaur had a series of spiked along its frill. It also had two spikes above its eyes. Hatched from an egg, this Cretaceous period dinosaur is believed to have roamed in herds. The Styracosaurus was found in North America and probably reacted to predators much like the current rhino. Not the smartest or the largest it definitely has an impressive skull and frill!

Now for our brief video… sadly my German is too rusty to make heads or tails of the facts they are sharing. But it is an interesting 3D rendition of our herbivore.

Tanystropheus

…And we are back to the dinosaurs while I sort out pictures for blog posts and proof others. Company, end of summer and back to full day school have slowed me a bit… but I promise to continue catching up!

#3 on the Dinosaurs.about.com’s list of the top 10 weirdest dinosaurs is the VERY long necked dinosaur Tanystropheus. In fact, scientist believe that its neck is as long as it could be without the dinosaur completely defying physics!!! While not technically a dinosaur this archosaur was found in the Triassic period in Europe and the Middle East. It is actually thought that it would have used its head and neck much like a fishing line.

Carnotaurus

Found in South America, the Carnotaurus had a rather intimidating visage. The flesh eating bull had dangerous horns on its head and a yen for meat. Found in the Cretaceous period, this carnivore had near useless front arms and hands but powerful legs. Though there HAS been some debate as to what it DID eat… with both carnivore and herbivore teeth.

We found this dinosaur in our book

But, onto the videos… and we have an ADORABLE one that we had to watch TWICE! You will have to go TO youTube to see this animated short HERE. Our second video was much shorter…

There was also an interesting RADIO piece about our carnivore with CBC.ca (back to my roots)… Quirks and Quarks… a show I used to listen to with my dad as a child! You can listen in HERE.
