A Major Milestone in 2014

This weekend marks the end of a lengthy phase in our married life… And thus I deviate from the catch up on the daily blog and have to share our newest milestone. Ken and I just finished our 30 day wait period for him to have his vasectomy done (or as it is called here in Minnesota – voluntary sterilization). 5 kids later and we feel that we have come to the end of our building of our family. Echo was the perfect final addition to a family of unique characters.

It is really now time to move on and RAISE our family… what a weird feeling. I have literally been focused on babies, pregnancy, nursing and all that for a decade. We now have moved from nappies and nipples to homeschooling and swimming lessons. In fact, in a little over a week our twins will be 10! It has always been agreed that when the time came to finalize our growth that it would be KEN who would take that step. Frankly the female version is a full out surgery and a much longer healing time. Surprisingly he was more than willing.

So today Ken followed family tradition and off he went with his mother (yup she is the designated driver for this procedure now THREE times!) and an hour later… done. As I type this up he is fast asleep and has been since 30 min after he got home. Such a huge step for our family in such a small and rather mundane procedure!

I have to giggle though… in 2004 when the twins were being circumcised Ken was off at the Canadian gov office taking his landed status interview (leaving me to deal with the tears and handing off the babies)… and then today, I was on the phone with the government attempting to hunt down the 5th passport of the kids’ proving they are ALL Americans (which was a DUH moment for us… I mean COME ON… they are HIS KIDS) and Ken is off to have his vasectomy… one starts to wonder if government and —-s go hand in hand… I know CRASS but come on… the mind finds the connection!

So we wait the 3 months for the final confirmation that Ken is indeed sterile and it is all too real that the only new children we will have in our life will be adopted or grandchildren (many many many years from now). WOW! BUT I have had my hand in the over population of the earth… time to pass the torch and raise children I can be confident and proud of sending them out in the world!

Waking Up Married

Often when I see Harlequin on a book cover I run and run fast… AWAY. I am not a fan of high description sexual content but Waking Up Married by Mira Lyn Kelly seemed to have a bit of a twist on the waking up married in Vegas. In Vegas for a wedding (not her own), Megan wakes up after wild night out married and confused to Connor, a wealthy business man.

A girl with a plan, after a string of broken relationships and a mother married 7 times, Megan is planning on using a sperm bank to have her baby without the added baggage of a man. Connor Reed is out having a night of it with his friend Jeff when their paths cross… a copious amount of alcohol on Megan’s side later and they are married…

Connor is sure they should give it a go, after all LOVE was never in the cards for him. A mother doomed to love a man who could not love her back fully, Connor has seen the dark side of commitment. His plan, to woo his wife and after a 3 month “trial” period make this marriage a long term commitment. On goes the story from there.

Again, this is a Harlequin Kiss book. So there IS sexuality… there is also romance, heartbreak and a bit of humour. Two damaged souls are attempting to create a shell of a marriage only for love to enter in. I did enjoy the attempts by Megan to show Connor each and every fault she has… from bad cooking skills to a smelly face mask she uses once a week…

So if  you can skip through (or even don’t mind) the sexual content (she does make a go at avoiding and refusing on the grounds of wanting to make a decision about this sudden marriage without sex confusing matters) and enjoy some humour and a bit of marital strife in your romances… Waking Up Married by Mira Lyn Kelly could be the afternoon read for you! 81+SXf5j7HL._SL1500_

The Inconvenient Duchess

Enter the world of the Regency Era with author Christine Merrill. But instead of the innocent young miss entering the home as a governess… or a companion to an elderly lady we have young Miranda on an errand to ensure she is not on the path to become a paid doxy. With an uncertain future and a sad past she is on a mission to retain her honour.

She manages to enter a home in mourning. The lady of the house felled by long standing illness leaving two sons. The irresponsible and dangerous St. John and his older brother the Duke. With no companion or luggage and having caught a ride from a couple who ended up being the gossipy pastor and his wife to the estate… well at this point the book brings its name to fruition and we begin the life of the Inconvenient Duchess. Compromised and wedded on the same day.

With our Duke and Duchess both coming from difficult pasts and the people around them not always there to help or support, this new and unplanned marriage has some trials and tribulations to face before two hearts can come together. There is, towards the end sexual content but it is dealt with without gross specifics. I personally avoid any that really do. So if  you are looking for a romance with a little turmoil… this is the book for you.
