No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells… a Book Review

Welcome to the Mystic Cafe and new owner Elly who recently inherited the cafe from her Grandma Imelda. The cafe AND the knowledge that through her food, some special spices and an amazing book she can work magic! Now if only she can ensure that there are no mistakes… With the help of her high school friend and waitress Mary Ann more than just full stomachs are in the works. With a bit of careful magic hearts, bodies and souls are lifted… that is until the wrong plate goes to the wrong man. After that all bets are off!

This first in the series is a quirky romantic mystery… and most definitely NOT a murder mystery. Mystic Village is full of magic and mystery for this beginner in all things magical. Without any knowledge more than what she is supposed to do in the cafe, Elly is christened quickly into the organizational structure of magic and its laws when Mary Ann accidentally delivers a magical plate to Rory, the man it was NOT intended for. And then the fun starts…

This story has its romance, quirky characters, a mystery and some magic to boot. All in all a fun read with potential in the future! A series to look at for sure! No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells by Rose Pressey was a very enjoyable read!

No Shoes No Shirt No Spells

Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead

Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday, it was AMERICAN Thanksgiving (our first) and we were super busy. Add to that how far behind I am with the blog event wise and well… I promise to get better!!! Pics will be resized and posts posted over the weekend! But for now a book review!

Vampires, Werewolves and Witches all come to the light of day in this Rose Pressey novel. The first in her Veronica Mason series. In this series these paranormal and magical creatures have come to be common knowledge. The main character is Veronica, a witch (sort of) who is the lead singer of a rockabilly group of VAMPIRES! They are attempting to ready themselves for a gig later in the week that a record producer has agreed to come to when there is a death. Not just any death but the (re??) death of their vampire bass player.

With a werewolf bestfriend who is dating ANOTHER vampire, an amazingly sexy and unknown bass player and adventure and danger everywhere you absolutely have to love the failed witch and her story. Now maybe failed is too harsh but she definitely is NOT successful with her spells, unless she wants a tube of lipstick for every attempt brings about a new tube! Thus her nickname as the lipstick witch.

I am really looking forward to the next one in this series. There is a little romance, a lot of paranormal, a good dose of humour and of course a mystery.   Add in some retro outfits, terrific supporting characters and a few twists and turns and seriously, get your hands on this book!!

Me and My Ghoulfriends

Otherwise known as how I started a new series AND found a new author… Rose Pressey is the author of this fun and quirky novel with a paranormal aspect. We join Larue Donavan, bookstore owner and Ghost buster extraordinaire at her bookstore Book Nook. She is joined there by (seriously) the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. I honestly think he was about my favourite side character of the whole story!

Now as you can probably figure out Larue can see dead people, in fact on the weekends she is traveling around helping them make it to the light. Thought she often ends up with spirits following her home (another way our cast of characters expands hilariously). I don’t want to give too much away but I can tell you there IS a love interest… a little mystery… some dead people (but no murders!) and so many entertaining moments and quirky dialogue.

I absolutely love that Larue is an independent and (generally) self assured woman. She is doing what she loves (working at a bookstore she owns AS WELL AS ghost hunt) with her bestfriend in the know and her dead friends along for the ride. If you want a good giggle, a GREAT heroine and a taste of the paranormal this is the book for you!!!
