The Boston Tea Party… Resources

After working our way forward from the Declaration of Independence to the abolishing of slavery we went back to the near beginning of it all with The Boston Tea Party. This was a Trinity’s choice topic. She had heard about it in passing and was very interested in finding out why “so much yummy tea was wasted.” Yup, my frugal little girl was quite put out by what she saw as an avoidable waste. “Why didn’t they just take it home, or tell them to take it back?”

So we based our unit on the DVD series Liberty’s Kids. It often goes on sale on Amazon. This 40 episode series is a great way to look at the events leading up to US independence. We actually plan to watch all the episodes over time and continue our biographies based on each featured person from history. We found a form sheet for our biographies thanks to Template.net. They have varying levels of difficulty and format to chose from. We specifically chose THIS ONE.

There was a nice selection of books to choose from at our local library.

We found a free lap book set up thanks to Homeschool Helper Online HERE. I used Liberty’s Kids worksheets as well at StarMaterials.com HERE.

For more helpful suggestions check out More Than A Homeschool Mom HERE, Teachers Pay Teachers free resource HERE and HERE. The site Mrs. Nussbaum has a reading comprehension sheet HERE

Hopefully this will help anyone else who is working on such an interesting topic, my big suggestion is GET THE DVD! The Liberty’s Kids is interesting and fun. 20170626_134110

Helpful worksheet. If I have not linked all that I use, a quick google search is awesome.

Oh Canada…

How we miss you! And how the boys asked so politely to do a FULL unit on you. And with that… time to share our resources!!! It is mostly a book like, but I figured… time to get this puppy posted. Remember to research interesting topics… I would suggest the following:

  • Inukshuks
  • First Nations
  • Beavers
  • Dinosaurs
  • RCMP
  • Kermode Bear
  • The “new” Territories
  • Canada Geese
  • Poutine
  • Maple Syrup

The list goes on! Good luck and enjoy.. eh.

BOOKS (and there are a few!)

DVD

  • Families of Canada from the Families of the World series. The link is to the 2015 version. We had the 2005 one from the library.

USEFUL SITES (quick links to their Canada resources… good luck!)

  • Kidzone HERE
  • SuperTeacher Worksheets HERE
  • Today I Found Out (on the flag) HERE
  • FactSlides.com HERE
  • Teachers Pay Teachers Freebie HERE
  • EasyScienceForKids worksheet HERE
  • ISLCollective has some worksheets HERE

Of course we used Activity Village for resources and did lots of colouring. Education.com has a bit, HERE is my collection. It is well worth it to do a search on dinosaurs found in Canada. We used to live near the Royal Tyrrell Museum which is an amazing dinosaur museum with some very new finds. Do check out their site HERE. Macleans also has a 10 coolest dinosaurs article to get you started HERE. Check out Global’s piece on a new dinosaur find HERE.

It is really past time for me to post this! So I am glad to get it up. I am sure we will cover our homeland once again in 2017. With it being a landmark year (150) I will try to find some interesting ways to learn even more about Canada in all her glory. Wish me luck!20160629_190711

October/Halloween/Stuff

Yup totally clear and concise that title is… anyway!

On the suggestion of a good friend due to mass mosquito annoyance I decided I would love a bat house. How better to expedite this than to do a BAT UNIT that ends with Daddy and kids making one such thing? Yup totally being devious here! Enter the book Stellaluna. And all the resources here in. Which I will now share with you!!

First of all the book – Stellaluna… check it out HERE. Now onto the fun stuff. I managed to find a free lapbook on Homeschool Share HERE, and more helpful pages:

  • Teachers Pay Teachers thanks to Promoting Success HERE
  • About.com finger puppet craft HERE
  • KidsSoup.com printable for counting HERE
  • Classroom Fun has some resources HERE
  • Little Miss Glamour Goes to Kindergarten has some helpful printables HERE
  • For the pages I printed off on Education.com you can check my collection HERE
  • We also used EnchantedLearning HERE
  • And of course Activity Village, they are our go to place for printables HERE
  • First Grade Wow has a fun printable HERE

For Halloween we really just went with the flow. Trick or treating… decorating for the season… We watched Room on the Broom of course. And of course, read the book HERE. I have a Halloween collection on Education.com HERE that you can check out. Oh and of course, Activity Village – HERE.

We had a few bat books we used for our unit!

I let Emanuel and Trinity assemble their lapbook as they pleased with minimal interference. It was a great wrap up on a unit they got really interested in! Seriously, there are so many interesting bats out there – our favourites were the fruit bat and the bumblebee bat.

We did a mini unit on Owls right after to continue our nocturnal animals/Halloween theme. You can check out my Education.com collection HERE. And of course, go to Activity Village for their printouts HERE. We had a few interesting books:

We printed out all the fun and interesting pages we could find and worked on a full on folder of interesting owl facts.

Of course all of this culminated in HALLOWEEN and COSTUMES! So enjoy the images! This year Zander was a wizard, Gavin a pirate, Emanuel a Storm Trooper (he demanded the light saber), Trinity Dorothy off of the Wizard of Oz and Miss Echo the Queen of Hearts thank to costume components from Aunty Shandai.20161031_142654
