Hell Hounds are for Suckers… a Book Review

Sometimes you just want a short, funny and rather quirky book. Hell Hounds are for Suckers by Jessica McBrayer is the second book in the San Francisco Vampire Series. Vampire Hannah is running solo and feeling lonely when she comes upon a little puppy… who turns out to be a hell hound who refuses traditional dog food and barks fire!

We have a sexy demon who wants his dog back, his angry demon ex, a djinn and more and it all adds up to a terrific and fast paced paranormal fantasy romance. Magic, romance, rules and more… I found Hannah to be a treat, Diel the demon a delight and the characters around them hilarious. This book could stand alone but it IS the second in a series. I think my next step is to check out the first… Sucking in San Francisco.

Rock ‘n’ Roll is Undead

Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday, it was AMERICAN Thanksgiving (our first) and we were super busy. Add to that how far behind I am with the blog event wise and well… I promise to get better!!! Pics will be resized and posts posted over the weekend! But for now a book review!

Vampires, Werewolves and Witches all come to the light of day in this Rose Pressey novel. The first in her Veronica Mason series. In this series these paranormal and magical creatures have come to be common knowledge. The main character is Veronica, a witch (sort of) who is the lead singer of a rockabilly group of VAMPIRES! They are attempting to ready themselves for a gig later in the week that a record producer has agreed to come to when there is a death. Not just any death but the (re??) death of their vampire bass player.

With a werewolf bestfriend who is dating ANOTHER vampire, an amazingly sexy and unknown bass player and adventure and danger everywhere you absolutely have to love the failed witch and her story. Now maybe failed is too harsh but she definitely is NOT successful with her spells, unless she wants a tube of lipstick for every attempt brings about a new tube! Thus her nickname as the lipstick witch.

I am really looking forward to the next one in this series. There is a little romance, a lot of paranormal, a good dose of humour and of course a mystery.   Add in some retro outfits, terrific supporting characters and a few twists and turns and seriously, get your hands on this book!!

To Kill a Warlock, an Urban Fantasy

And I am back with another first in a H.P. Mallory series. This one featuring Dulcie the Fairy. She is hard working, independent and absolutely a riot. Dulcie the fairy has enhanced speed and fairy dust… which is a really amazing ability I am not going to ruin for you by explaining away. Unlike Jolie from the other series… Dulcie is a rather strong character. She doesn’t waver in her decisions… except perhaps in regards to her ears that are pointed, as she explains, like Spock. Something she does not like.

There is an element of romance, a strong mystery, undercover work.. TWO men in her life – her boss the elf Quillan and the new man in the room – Knight who is a great unknown. Add in other strong male paranormals… a vampire for one who does NOT sparkle, and some nitty gritty crime work and I have to admit this series is much more to my tastes.

Don’t get me wrong there is some gore, people do NOT die pretty and some blatant sexual content… they have to go undercover briefly in an S&M club… but not something that goes on and on and on. The character interactions are varied and entertaining, the supporting characters make you giggle and of course there is Dulcie fighting crime, putting herself on the line and snapping out amazing banter.

If you can handle the more mature elements and like some magic with your crime, check out To Kill a Warlock, the first in the Dulcie O’Neil series.
