Stegosaurus

I was so shocked and embarrassed to see that we had not yet covered the very popular and familiar Stegosaurus! This herbivore has quite the memorable visual with its large plates and barbs on its tail… and the beak mouth without any teeth. Found in the Jurassic Period with an unusually small brain the actual reason behind the plates along its back has been long discussed (And is talked about in an episode of Dino Dan. There are actually multiple episodes that deal with this dinosaur on the Canadian/American show).

We had two videos. The I’m a Dinosaur video and then a series from the Discovery channel that you can view HERE.

There are plenty of links regarding this very popular dinosaur but here are the ones we used, let’s go with a list…

Stegosaurus

Herrerasaurus

Found in the Triassic period, this early theropod was a dominante predator in Argentine (South America). The Herrerasaurus had short forearms with claws on its fingers. 3 partial fossils have been found and it is not until the 80’s that a skull was recovered. To date this dinosaur is one of the earliest known to roam the earth! Quite the interesting critter.

We have TWO videos… first I’m a Dinosaur…

…and second, a drawing video by Brooks Leibee.

Argentinosaurus

Like the name suggests, this dinosaur was found in Argentina. From the Cretaceous period, this herbivore could be one of the largest land animals ever discovered to date. Discovered in 1993 it is believed that with its massive size it would have spent most of its time eating and with its long neck would be able to reach vegetation most other dinosaurs could not.

We had two videos. The I’m a Dinosaur embedded below AND the BBC site with its videos you can watch THERE.

Definitely a dinosaur of interest with its massive vertebrae and gargantuan size! So we used the following links to learn more… There is the EnchantedLearning fact sheet HERE. A Hawaiian site has a short bit about our dinosaur HERE. Dinosaurs.about.com has their page HERE. Kidsdinos.com has their charts and map HERE. The Natural History Museum has a great picture HERE of the dinosaur. Scholastic has a picture of the vertebrae being discovered HERE. And of course Wiki has their say HERE.
