Diabetic Success!

Just over 2 hours at the diabetic clinic and I close that chapter on my life… I am down to testing TWICE a day (instead of 4) with a staggered variation and the reminder to call if my numbers get consistently high. The doctor was pleased even with my high numbers occasionally, according to THEIR scales I am up a bit of weight and other than that – well I spent 2 hours sewing on my last commission so it wasn’t a TOTAL waste. Long wait just to be told – well done, good luck… good bye.

So far!

Poor Ken spent the hours in the van with the kids… out on a few errands and then watching a movie on the dvd player. By the time I made it back out of my appointments they were ALL ready to head back home. What did we ever do before dvd players?

We had guests tonight as well! The Davey family is up for a little over a week from California and were able to come by for a visit. Talk about excitement for the kids! They have 3 children in their family ranging from 9 to 5. 2 boys and a girl. We had pizza for dinner and lots and lots of playtime!

Yum!

Magic!

So a good day… no a GREAT day! And now to get back to visiting.

Snuggles!

Patterns, Homeschooling and Some 2005 Pictures

I think this is my week of getting things done but at the same time feeling a wee bit like I am falling short on my goals. Little things, like today I REALLY wanted to get the whole family out for a walk or to play Candyland but Ken had to travel further than I thought he would have to to go and get Trinity’s new snowsuit (new to us at least!). That ate up a huge chunk of our evening.

The trip to get the snowsuit was so worth it though! For 10.00 we got a two piece snowsuit, hat and mittens. All that is left is boots (Saturday). She is not too sure about the outfit but I am sure that once the snow comes and she sees her brothers all decked out and ready to play outside she will be quick to follow.

The boys spent a nice chunk of their time outside playing in the backyard. At one point they built a shed for Emanuel’s bike to park in. Quite the endeavour. They are all 3 becoming quite the pros at pedalling. I am not certain but next year we may be able to take off the training wheels on the twins’ bikes. I know that we are hoping to get Emanuel his first bike on his birthday in February (the twins were 4 when they got their bikes). Trinity gets his trike in the spring I think.

School wise we were hard at work with the letter J. So of course I took the opportunity to have each of the big boys write out the name Johnson – I got one try out of each before they were VERY unimpressed but their letters are looking a lot better. I figure I will leave the pages with my example at the top down where they can get to them and have them practice at least once a day. Eventually we have to add the “Reinsch” in as well but I figure if I can get them to spell out Johnson and be able to SAY both that is a minor victory.

Of course we did our time on the computer… J is for jellybeans, jumping… that sort of thing. Which then had us gluing together our painted pieces for frames (we finished them off before bedtime with a little glitz). Tomorrow I have requests for painting pieces black, brown and purple! I did one frame up myself with the left overs… though I may just tie it with a cord and have it be an as is ornament.

For our match component I had them do a dot-to-dot. A bear fishing in a boat actually. I think they are to be gifted to my mom this weekend. Hopefully tomorrow we will have the time for Candyland as a family.

I also sat down with each of the twins and did their Bible lesson with them. I want to work on the scripture memorizing some more but they each drew a picture to send back. The story was about two kids working in a garden so they drew their own pictures of the garden to send back. I am amazed at how much they retain after one reading of the story (of course much more when it is one on one like today then when we read in a group session). I love it when they amaze and/or surprise me like that!

For the first time I had to struggle to get enough apples for the applesauce! Not only did I have to climb up on the ladder but I had to use a couple of the Granny Smiths we bought on Sunday at H&W. Don’t get me wrong I can SEE apples up in the tree… I am just too short to get them ladder or no.

Since to day was 9/9/09 Walmart had that deal I mentioned in a previous entry – 99 photos for 9.99. So this morning when the boys headed out to play I sat down and ordered my 99. Finally I am working on filling up my 2005 album. OLD pictures! The twins with curls, baby Catherine who is now 4 I think. And the quality – hilarious to think of how proud we were of that old camera! But the memories are grand and the pictures good enough.

Speaking of pictures and the like – last night we added another free pattern onto the site. I am debating revamping the page to eventually be only the patterns or move it to a new link to avoid cluttering and allow me to still post the pictures of stuff I do that is NOT of my own design. This newest IS containing a mild swear – the “A” word that I did up for my sister in law so be forewarned! Ken is also adding my donation button – fingers crossed something comes of that! Who knows right?

Stitching wise I worked on and finished the name on the stocking today! Finally the recipient is clear! Thank goodness his name is nice and short. I am very happy with how the lettering turned out. Tomorrow I will either work on the stocking or start on another small project. Ken is working out the issues with my pharmacist themed one so I am debating getting started on one of the little monsters I plan on doing for the boys for their Christmas presents.

AIDAN!

AIDAN!

I have to admit that for all that goes on in our day I still worry that we are not quite doing enough. Are the boys getting everything they should out of our education? Am I including enough to keep them busy, occupied and learning? Should I be doing more.. less.. things differently? Amazing how you can be confident one second and doubting the next but I am! Sometimes it is nice to talk to people on the outside looking in (supportive people mind you!) to hear how they see our progress. Lately I have had people complimenting me and the boys all over the place so that is a bit of a boost. I just have to work on my own awareness of progress. After all they ARE learning new things and asking more and more questions. I guess I need to not only be proud of them but of us as a family unit – we ARE learning as we go and it IS a fun process (most of the time) and that is important! So much to think about every day that sometimes you just feel a little over whelmed. Thank goodness for Facebook and egroups for support!

Sean came by after his doctor’s appointment today – more not good news, since he can’t rotate the ankle another 2 weeks on limited work which means he CAN’T work since as a plumber in the company he is working for there isn’t work that fits the criteria to be done. Frustrating! But Trinity and Emanuel were happy to have him over to play with!

Playing With Uncle Sean!

Playing With Uncle Sean!

With Sean already here Alan called up to see what was going on and so started a night of Magic in my kitchen. Not a horrible thing except my table is being taken up by the guys while I am trying to bake cookies. Trinity is in love with the oatmeal applesauce cookies so I needed to make another batch to have enough to make it through our busy weekend. Tomorrow I want to make the dozen apple muffins for mom and Mike and then Friday I will make ANOTHER batch of the oatmeal applesauce for the Sunday School bbq on Sunday (not sure if WE are staying but the cookies will!). I just finished off a batch of sugar free leather for mom and Mike as well (he is insulin dependant). So not bad on the baking!

Magic Night!

Magic Night!

Tomorrow we are not going to the park date. Ken has a conference call in the morning (YAY) and then in the afternoon I have to sit on the phone and fill out student loan repayment forms with the government (hopefully this will result in a quick and POSITIVE conclusion unlike the previous government dealings!). So I think that I will try and get the boys out on the bikes and then a bit of an early family game night. (as long as Ken makes it to HLSA to drop off our application form) Saturday and Sunday are more than going to make up for missing the park session I think. Saturday’s corn maze will be a first for ALL of us – I think we may even take the video camera! It even looks like it should be warm and there is a petting zoo… it is going to be HARD to get the boys to go home all 4 of them!

Maybe the Sign of a Few More Sunny Days to Come?

A New Recipe, the Letter F and a Personal Introspective

Started the day with VERY warm weather and ended it with thunderstorm warnings! Thank goodness I headed out this afternoon and picked the raspberries and collected apples. I figure with the wind and rain tomorrow there should be enough apples for TWO batches of applesauce and a further increased need to reorganize our freezer – Ken is determined to NOT plug in the apartment sized deep freeze no matter how energy efficient it says he is (he wishes to avoid added energy costs).

Talking about applesauce – I have a new recipe to share: Applesauce Brownies. The batter was SO thick but the end result yummy, you don’t really taste the applesauce but they are so nice and moist.

Applesauce Brownies

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup applesauce unsweetened

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup sugar

1 cup flour, all purpose

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup nuts (I left these out)

preheat oven to 375 F

Combine oil, applesauce and cocoa. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients together and stir into the mixture.

Pour the batter into a greased and floured (or wax paper lined and sprayed) 9 inch square pan. Sprinkle onĀ  nuts.

Bake about 20 to 30 minutes or until top is set but edges are not dried out. Toothpick will come out clean. Cut into 16 or more squares.

That was my foray for the day into baking… for lunch I had a very special treat – BC peaches! We managed to make it into H&W before they sold out on Sunday. I adore BC peaches… and today two hit the perfect ripeness for a sugar free treat. Unlike the brownies! Total yum!

School was actually not too bad today… we continued our adventures in the alphabet with the letter F. We checked out fish and flamingos and glue flowers to our letter. For craft time the boys made more glittery pinecones and put together another set of angels.

At the end of the day they all decided to hang out at the table and do their own study time. Emanuel worked on counting with the abacus and the twins played with flashcards and practised sewing. Lots of spelling and counting and sharing. Though Trinity was quite offended since she couldn’t reach all the fun stuff!

I am happy to report that Ken’s naps are becoming less frequent and shorter. He is going in tomorrow for another appointment with the dr in attendance this time. Hopefully they will be happy with his progress. I am just glad that he is getting back to normal. It is only a matter of time before his body is used to the meds and then we can really move on to getting him more motivated and checked in.

I got my first real pay out on the surveys I do… 10.00 should end up in my paypal account sometime next month! That will pay for my monthly BigFish game credit. I finally reached a year with them as well so I should be getting a stuffed BigFish in the mail next month! I think I will give it to Emanuel for Christmas as one of the things in his stocking. He LOVES stuffed toys!

Walmart has a great deal coming up on September the 9th. For 9.99 you get 99 photos (ordered online). Definitely worth budgeting in the money to finish off one of my photo albums (which are so far behind – I am working on 2005 right now). Now that everything is basically digital I can take my time and when I leave it for a year (or more) it is easier to go back and pick out the best of the best. I do love paging through an album. So be sure to check out the deal! Of course the moment I get this email add I can’t find my book listing all the photos I need so I spent 30 min this evening going through the labelled pages and sorting it out.

Ted and Sean came over to keep Ken company tonight and partake of some Magic (I have just not been feeling 100% today). Trinity had to get in some play time too… stating her interest in specific cards and attempting to abscond with Daddy’s counters. Each one of the kids has “played” Magic with Daddy at some time or another.

In the wake of my cousin Amber giving birth a common conversation has resurfaced in our own home – the discussion about Baby #5. When Trinity was creeping up on her first birthday Ken and I came to a concrete agreement that we WANTED a #5. The deluge of bad fortune in the past 3 months has not turned us off of this idea, nor really put any sort of postponing to it. After all our plan was to shoot for when Trinity hits 2 1/2 before we even start trying for said baby. When we got married the number of children was something we discussed and 5 was the number, still IS the number we want. I figure having this final addition to our home at the point where potentially only Trinity would be in diapers (maybe even potty trained?) would be advantageous. Now I know there WILL be people in our life that are total aghast at this proclamation but the best part about that is that it is NOT their life! Yes, at this point we DO owe more people money than we would like but you know what? They will get it back… in time… I have saved enough clothes for either gender and things like carseats and highchairs and cribs… I know there are those who say we are crazy to have the 4 we do… I would like to think we are just blessed. Not only are we ABLE to have children relatively easily but we are enjoying our large family. Definitely NOT everyone’s cup of tea. So before anyone has some sort of a fit I will reiterate – I am NOT pregnant, I will NOT be pregnant for AT LEAST another year… but we are hoping that a year or so from now we may be blessed with just one more baby to love!

It is a bit difficult some days to keep an optimistic face but what with us figuring out what is basically troubling Ken and getting medical assistance and the kids embracing fully our letter a day program I am actually starting to feel it returning. Trinity is a continual ray of sunshine in my life right now and I am finding that focusing on her joy and the boys’ successes is bringing me much closer to MY personal norm – optimistic, perhaps somewhat ditzy Lisa. Smiles are coming more easily as are creative moments and patience is returning as well. We have been brought low but we are working our way back up and I am proud of us. Now to just make a conscious effort to retain the life lessons I have learned and the abilities I have fostered.
