Pinewood Derby Race!

February 8-12

Saturday marked our very first Pinewood Derby with the Scouts. And while we did not win, we did race a sweet car! In fact, Emanuel was more upset that he didn’t get the door prize he put tickets in for than loosing the car race! He really just wanted Blackout to race… and race it did! Aidan, on the other hand, won a bunch of awards! Big Andy even said that if we had sanded our wheels and greased our axles we may have won! But we really wanted to go by the book and sources were on both sides on any sort of wheel alteration.101_6120101_6123

We were at the races with most of the Novaks (Alex was at a friend’s place as his races are another weekend with a different troop). Food was a little pricey so Darcy and I took some of the kids and went to the dollar store across the highway for snacks.101_6124

I was so pleased to see not only Emanuel out there playing but the girls and the twins as well. So much socializing and fun to be had.101_6128

After the races (which did seem to go on forever! We had cars only in the youngest race but had to wait for the awards which were not only at the end but after a lunch break??) we all headed over to the Novak’s for an afternoon/evening of visiting and fun. It is so nice to come over and visit there. The kids just wander off and play for hours!101_6139

101_6140Sunday was super special for us… not only did we START with Sunday School, but when the kids and Ken got back Echo and I joined them for a special field trip. But first we saw our WHITE SQUIRREL!101_6144

Then we headed over to the Chinese grocery in the city – United Noodles. That place is a wonderland for our kids. So much to see question. While it is not as large as T&T back home, it is a substantial store. They have a nice freezer section and dried foods. Not much on the fresh. We did good with some on sale items and quite a few new foods for Emanuel to try as Scouts suggested we do.

I even grabbed myself some new tea to try. We had a hard  time finding anything post extraction Ken could handle immediately but he took great pleasure in reading labels and checking out some of the (to us) crazy combinations on the shelves.1606988_10152222398376151_658130963_n

1780885_10152222402606151_228398082_n101_6145101_6146We started the week with a fun field trip to a brand new gas station which has its grand opening. First we went through the flyer and talked about sales and how coupons work. Then we headed off with our flyer and went shopping. There was a terrific deal on donuts, free coffee, bananas that are always at 38 cents a pound! We had a blast wandering the aisles and talking about what is a good price on foods and what isn’t. Reading price tags and labels.

These were a dollar a half dozen!

These were a dollar a half dozen!

They had sandwiches and cheeseburgers at a total steal which made lunch a breeze! Of course that didn’t stop us from working on our school work. The twins have been taking turns each day reading one of our Valentines Day books to the rest. We are still having some mumbling problems but the smoothness of their reading is AMAZING compared to last year!101_6174

101_6176Emanuel of course had to record his pinewood derby experience in his journal.101_6175

The weather was rather pleasant so the boys spent some time in the snow.101_6177

The girls worked on a fun Valentines Day fingerpainting activity I found them on Facebook through Pinterest. HERE is the original idea thanks to Red Ted Art. I think they turned out sweet and both girls had a blast making them.101_6179

101_6195Miss Trinity and I had storytime together with a Valentines Day theme. Each book we are drawing a picture to go in our folder for Valentines Day. It is fun reading together.101_6180

Our sports of choice for the beginning of the week were snowboarding and the skeleton. I was totally unfamiliar with the Skeleton! But wow is it a scary sport! Hurtling head first down the hill on basically a few pieces of metal… crazy!!! So of course we had to get on the internet and learn all about them! And share the links of interest with all of you!101_6181

Skeleton:

  • The history of on Rusbob  HERE
  • 5 things to know about the sport thanks to yahoo news HERE
  • Equipment and history thanks to Olympic.org HERE
  • Our video and all that fun stuff is found on Activity Village HERE

Snowboarding:

  • History of thank to library.thinkquest HERE
  • Infoplease.com’s information HERE
  • Our video etc is of course on Activity Village HERE and later on Art for Kids put up an how to draw… you can find that on their site, link on right.

The twins had swimming lessons on Monday. It was their mid way review and it looks like things are going pretty well! They are still loving it!!101_6182

We had a visit with a fairy princess…101_6184

And another Valentine book.101_6185

We ended the evening on Tuesday with some game playing. I love it when the kids help Echo learn how to play too. They can be so patient.101_6187

Mid week was another Olympic themed day with a touch of Valentines. The kids wrote their own poem using the word OLYMPICS.101_6188

The boys headed back out into the deep deep snow! I cannot believe how much snow we have around.101_6191

Trinity did up a beautiful picture of traditional Russian children.101_6193

And we did a variety of toilet paper roll crafts (starting the day before). Each kid had the option to think on their own (Emanuel’s castle tower and Trinity’s telescope) or use the list I found on Facebook for 25 different options. You can find that list HERE thanks to Kids Activities Blogs.101_6194

And there goes the first half of our week! So much snow, fun and crafting. I am very proud of our progress!

A Slow Start

For all of our Easter resources please refer to the blog entry titled “Easter Resources“.

March 18-19

Sometimes you just have to stop and take a breather and since the previous weekend was St. Patrick’s Day and we shuffled some of our unit ending stuff (like assembly of the poster) to Saturday out of the necessity of having to make Wednesday a light day (VISITORS!!!) I figured it was best to throw all but our final St. P’s book, worksheet and our spelling out the window and do a jimjam day.

All at work

What was memorable?

Final book

In fact, our first in a year really! Those who had been keen to get dressed in the morning had the option to get back in their sleepwear and the rest of us grabbed pillows and blankets and sat back to relax.

Pj’s with accessories

After as much tv (with some blatantly educational stuff squished in for good measure… Word Girl, Handy Manny and his Spanish…) as anyone wanted and some yummy food for meals and snacks we moved onto Minecraft. I think one or two made their way outside to play in the snow too but so much was coming down it was just not much fun I am told. We have gotten a TON of snow this weekend!!!

Tuesday was back to the grind stone… though at a quicker pace than we are used to to catch up. Dinosaurs and Easter galore! We had our first Easter book – Easter by Trudi Strain Trueit.

Eggs!

Again, I am making a resource blog for this theme. So at the end of the series I will post all our links etc. If you are interested in something you see us doing here in the meantime drop me a line and I will send along my resources. I do love Activity Village and Education.com (both links on the right) for my thematic worksheets though!

A jumble of learning

We made TWO cards today, thumb prints of course. One is already in the mail box on its way to the birthday girl. The other is for Baby Lily. The kids have definitely gotten into the creative mode with these.. cats, hedgehogs, even a sheep have made their way onto the page.

Just waiting for words and signatures

We finally found a moment to record our special St. Patrick’s Day poem: The Fairies out of Sally Go Round the Stars by Sarah Webb and Claire Ranson.

Fairies

Up the airy mountain,

Down the rushy glen,

We daren’t go a-hunting

For fear of little men;

Wee folk, good folk,

Trooping all together;

Green jacket, red cap,

And white owl’s feather.

The book we got it from

We ended our night with a movie… Veggie Tales: The Night Before Easter… not a bad ending to our day with popcorn and all!

The movie

Movie and popcorn

Tomorrow we start our Easter poem memorizing. Although instead of a poem… we are doing a song!!! Wish us luck!

Emanuel sharing his dinosaur time with Echo!

Platypus In Depth

Do you have a yearning to learn more about this rare, unique and amazing mammal? Well, here are all the resources, links, etc that we used to learn about this Australian animal!!

The lapbook:

Books:

  • Platypuses by Sara Louise Kras
  • Electric Animals by Natalie Lunis (this has a two page piece on the platypus’ ability to use electroreceptors to find food)
  • Platypus by Chris Riddell (a story book not a non fiction book)
  • A Platypus, Probably by Sneed B. Collard III
  • Platypus, A Century-long Mystery by William Caper

Crafty Bits:

  • Make your own Platypus on Learn Create Love by using their instructions HERE. We put our legs on with brads and went without the googly eyes.
  • Make your own Platypus paperbag puppet using instructions by Danielle’s Place HERE. The cutting is a little advanced on the feet for true preschoolers but we managed!
  • We didn’t make it to this craft but it looks fun, make your own Perry the Platypus out of felt and foam HERE.

Colouring Pages

  • P is for Platypus HERE.
  • Flag of Australia HERE.
  • A random Platypus HERE.
  • Mommy and baby with eggs HERE. Though the eggs are bigger than they should be etc etc.

Worksheets

  • Compare the tracks of various Australian animals HERE.
  • Learn a bit about the Platypus and colour one as well HERE.
  • Wordsearch for the older kids HERE.
  • All about platypus colouring page and fill in the blank riddle HERE.
  • Duck Billed Platypus Anatomy HERE.
  • Platypus mini book to fill in yourself HERE.
  • Platypus notebooking pages with colour image of a swimming platypus HERE.
  • Templates that we used for our end of book facts of interest HERE.
  • Not so much a worksheet but a POEM!! 4-40 has a great platypus poem HERE.

We have an amazing picture of platypus babies thanks to Facebook via Dr. Carin Bondar – Biologist with a Twist. Keep in mind her Facebook profile HERE does have some more mature content this picture is certainly worth it! The tagline with this picture when it made its way to my timeline is as follows:

Here’s your daily dose of adorable – baby platypuses! There’s no official name for baby platypuses, but they’re often referred to as puggles or platypups.
Platypuses are one of the five extant species of monotreme, meaning that they are mammals that lay eggs. It’s also one of the very few venomous mammals – the male has a “spur” that’s capable of delivering enough venom to kill a small dog.

Videos:

I will for the most part embed, but some do not allow it. Hopefully these will remain valid videos for some time! Our first video is from youTube subscriber 911TRUTHINATOR and is a longer educational piece on the “World’s Strangest Animal.”

National Geographic and their dangerous hunter themed video. I will warn you, they pump up the platypus to seem scary (??) the kids did NOT approve.

A short video of the Senior Platypus Keeper Ian Elton with Ember the 6 month old platypus.

In Australia, Go Paddling With the Platypus. Seriously… we live on the wrong continent. This video gives a bit of a close look to a playful platypus.

Check out the video below to see a platypus doing platypus things at Mount Field National Park.

Of course there are all the moments of Perry the Platypus on Phineas and Ferb. We specifically borrowed The Perry Files from the library. Wild Kratts also have a platypus focused episode called Platypus Cafe that you can purchase on Amazon.com.

Helpful links:

  • Wonder how the platypus got its name? Well Wiki Answers knows right HERE.
  • National Geographic Kids Creature Feature platypus HERE.
  • KidsBiology.com has a brief page on the platypus HERE.
  • Squuidoo has a great fact page HERE.

Part of the lapbook calls for looking at the Echidna who is the other mammal in the Monotreme family. So here are our links that we used to supplement what tiny bit of information we had in our library books!

  • EnchantedLearning has a page with an anatomy picture HERE.
  • Activity Village has a mini book we used to record what we learned HERE. We took the little file folder shape from the lapbook and made it into a pocket to put our mini book in.
  • Kids.net.au has a great Echidna page HERE.

We used two videos with our Echidna. I am warning you now, youTube seems to carry a lot of information on the male reproductive organs of the Echidna. The two videos I have below do NOT cover this aspect as I did not feel that the… uniqueness of this portion of the animal was necessary to our learning.

First a National Geographic Video – World’s Weirdest.

And our second video about an Echidna Puggle at Taronga Zoo. Unlike the platypus, the echidna has an official name for its babies – the puggle.

And that is that! Here are a few of our pages! I hope this comes in helpful. If it does, please send me a message, leave a comment… etc.
