Penelope… A Book Review

I love the little blurb on the cover of the book Penelope by Anya Wylde…

It is monstrously unfair that whenever a girl needs her wits about her, she goes and does something completely idiotic.

Right there that sets the tone for this tongue in cheek regency era romance. Young Penelope has been sent to London to stay with the woman who once promised her mother to look after her. Sadly Penelope’s mother died when she was young leaving her to the not so tender mercies of her stepmother… oh and stepsisters (who are neither evil nor important to the storyline to a great degree). So she has spent much time “talking” to her mother’s portrait and growing up to be a very singular young lady in possession of a very friendly… goat?

In fact, on Amazon it is listed as a Madcap Regency Romance. I will say this is NOT a historical Regency… little care is spent making sure the manners and language of ALL characters remains in period… but the laughs are there in spades, including a rather interesting dressmaker, who was my favourite secondary character – one of my favourite lines is spoken by Madame…

Girl, let me educate you. I have the soul of a woman, and that means my bonnet jiggles for a man.

Although a close second comes from our main character discussing her emotional state in the face of the duke:

“I am frightened because of… peanuts.” “Peanuts?” Madame asked faintly. “Yes, peanuts. Beth, one of my stepsisters, is allergic to peanuts. Whenever she eats a peanut her face flushes, her tongue feels swollen, her heart starts racing, and she feels queer. I feel the same when the duke is around, so you see the only conclusion is that I am allergic to the duke. I know he does not truly want to kill me but he might do just that by simply being around me.”

This madcap miss and her duke are a joy to read, if you are willing to giggle your way through a book and not too stuck on historical minutia this could be the book for you!!!

The Ghost and Jacob Moorhead… a Book Review

The Ghost and Jacob Moorhead is the first in the series The Ghost and Romance series by Joanne Savery. A humourous romance with a mystery stacked on top of it. I really enjoyed this Regency era story. There are issues of class, true love, inheritance and of course a ghost. The main characters are trying to determine who each other really are, beyond the gossip and the shared unorthodox history. While upstanding people in their own right, their parentage is less than stellar with adulterous parents on one side and a love match deemed inappropriate by the Ton on the other.

Jacob Moorhead, the heir arrives with the late Lord Everston still in residence, as the resident ghost… remaining along side his long time love the housekeeper and aunt of Verity born of a love match and neglected by her parents due to their all encompassing love. With a will to follow and land at stake Jacob is stuck at the residence for a year, or until he finds love…

With a scheming pair in the wings trying to turn Jacob’s head and lose him the land there is adventure, mystery, love, lies and truth. The minor characters are entertaining, the landscape beautiful and the romance heart warming. A wonderful paranormal regency romance!

Christmas Scandal… Not! A Book Review

Back to the regency era with this short story. First off, I LOVE the little definition of the romance content the Amazon page gives:

Blush:  This is a sweet romance (kisses only, no sexual content)

Doesn’t that just make you want to read it?? I will admit right off, this is a 2 chapter story really with not a whole lot of development. The romance is already there – at the end, a married couple. But, the eccentric spinster sisters Elf and Ally are a treat and their willingness to promise (and follow through) help to anyone in need is heartwarming. Now, you really don’t have any reason to feel for the people other than the fact that it is a lovely quick tale to read on a quiet afternoon. For someone like myself who loves all things regency it is perfect though for a little bit of the era on a snowy afternoon!

So if you just want a taste of regency Christmas Scandal… Not! By Jeanne Savery (labelled a Scintillating Sample) is a great taste of her writing style.
