Ta-Da Moments for Kids and Myself Craft Wise!

What a day… thank goodness the boys love being outside as I had two loaves of apple bread to bake and tons of tidying to do! But before that we did do some school work. Another dot to dot for the whole group and then a new ornaments. Really simple though most of it has to be done by an adult as you need hot glue.

You need a white and red pipecleaner (12 inches) and then a green and red cut into 3 inch segments, the package I got the activity out of had the premade bows but I am sure ribbon would work and I had bells around the house.

You curl up the longer pipecleaner using hot glue (carefully!! got my finger good) to keep the coil together.

This is then hot glued to a 3 inch piece for the stem.

Add glitter if you like. Then add the bell and bow and TA-DA ornament. I just need to find my plastic string to glue a loop on and these babies are ready for gifting. We made 8. The boys basically did the glittering part.

I am hoping on finding more pipecleaner crafts. We have a nice selection from our gift stash and the boys love the results. So if anyone has any suggestions please please please send them my way!

We took our second set of Borax ornaments today. This time using white pipecleaners the two  that used coloured water picked up the colour nicely. Still rather heavy but the boys are VERY excited about giving them away.

Trinity spent her afternoon in the laundry basket. I am not sure why but each of the kids has chosen that as their favourite playtime location sometime or another. The lure of the empty basket is HUGE. So much fun was had in the middle of the livingroom while I took a break and watched an old old old episode of Perry Mason (guilty plreasure).

Cross stitch wise I do have something to share – the quick project has reached completion and I am VERY happy with the results. The same script as previous with bunnies from Subversive Cross Stitch. Those bunnies come in handy so often!

Tomorrow I am finally getting around to getting my full range of bloodtests done. 8:20 in the morning and I HATE needles. This one calls for fasting so no food or drink other than water after 8 pm. And of course then you wait two weeks to either hear nothing or bad news (fun fun).

As to the government – well they suck… enough said and all I want to say tonight!

Monday In a Retrospect

What a day. Not nearly as productive baking wise as my oven was tied up for most of the day with apple leather but I did make a yummy vegetable soup from scratch! Though it could have used corn and I am sure I will add more to it tomorrow for lunch or something. Really simple:

1 medium onion cut up, 6 carrots peeled and cut up, 6 or 7 potatoes cubed and 4 stalks of celery cut up. Also 900 ml of chicken broth, 4 cups of water and parsley and bowtie noodles.

I put 2 tablespoons of butter in the bottom of my soup pot and with the heat at medium high threw in the carrots, celery and onion and for 5 min sauted them. I then added in the chicken stock (broth), water and potatoes and brought it up to a boil. Meanwhile I cooked up half a bag of the bowties and threw those in, adding the parsley when the potatoes were about cooked. The boys were a little unsure of the “green bits” as they put it but willingly consumed a nice sized bowl each.

For breakfast we tried one of those add water and shake style pancake batters. Kathy sent one home with Ken. I was less than impressed, it leaked a little since when you shake it expands and it had lumps… but the kids were happy with it. I am fine just with taking the mix and putting it in a bowl and adding water that way. Though the concept is sound. There were also no left overs.

School wise I am feeling a tad overwhelmed with the whole having to start our Kindergarten career without the previously planned curriculum. I asked a couple mentor type people and two of my egroups and got some ideas but now am almost faced with too many options. I have to admit there IS a fear that I will not choose the right thing and they either won’t get the education they should or won’t be interested. I HAVE found a lapbook set up for the entire alphabet in 26 days for only $1.00 that I am seriously considering just to put that final emphasis on each letter and then moving into the sounds and perhaps reading.

I know I also want to work on counting further and further and maybe some simple adding and subtracting. Lots of crafts are a must (of course) and, in fact, today we started with some sewing. I got some round plastic canvas pieces, blunt needles and yarn. It is going to take some time but they are sort of getting the hang of it. Gavin more so than Zander.

Today we finally finished the butterflies for Zander and Gavin. So tomorrow we will be putting up the bugs in the twins’ room (their room is pink and they have been asking for more things on the wall, with these I can put up a bunch of things with scotch tape and not have to worry about nail holes).

We also had a go at 9’s again. They were drawing them half the time right and half the time like “P’s”. Maybe tomorrow we will try out the number 10 for size. Emanuel surprised me when I was measuring out his Borax for the ornaments by counting to 9 with me (very quietly but he doesn’t like to draw attention when he does things like that). And in doing one of the work sheets I printed out from a free download on currclick he was able to figure out the legend and colour at least a couple of the shapes the colour indicated (until he got bored and decided he would rather colour rainbows – which I agree are much much prettier). So they are definitley getting more than I think they are out of our days! Which is a great feeling.

I have been working on my magazine beads again… I like the result and am hoping the kids will find them fun. If I can get them to work out well enough maybe I will include some in the Christmas packages for the kids we know. I am hoping to get another craft for that going on Wednesday.

Oh and a super special treat – Esther called (via Skype) from Grenada! Things are going well and she is definitely enjoying herself as well as learning something new each day! I have to admit I REALLY miss her, but what an opportunity!!!

Esther Phones

Ken disappeared for around 4 or more hours tonight. Ran out to bank and the grocery store for like 3 things and all of a sudden – nothing. 8:45 rolls around and the phone rings – Ken at  the grocery store. Apparently Friday’s trip to the ditch loosened some connections so cell phone less Ken had to somehow contact AMA (AAA? whichever) and have them come fix it – thank goodness he got the woman’s insurance information = not our bill! Add this experience to the “wish we had Ken’s cell back” list. Thank goodness I had everything I needed for the soup, and managed to bathe Emanuel and Trinity before the call came.

Oh well Ken AND the van are in one piece so it is all good. I am done the words for the latest quick project… just need the quotation marks and pink bunnies and I can post it here! I am still hoping that Ken will have time to set up my patterns on here. OH and tomorrow is THE DAY the government has PROMISED to come through for us – I will surely let you know!!! Oh believe me I will be VERY vocal if it goes sour yet again!

Rainy Sunday

Sunday has been a rather good day all in all. Granted the weather has not been the greatest but man have I been productive! We ran out in the morning to H&W where there was a weekend sale on strawberries… as well as potatoes and carrots being a terrific price. I froze the ripest of the berries for later use and am planning on that veggie soup for tomorrow.

My afternoon was spent baking – I found 3 new recipes – two of which use applesauce and the third raspberries. The first was oatmeal applesauce cookies. Ken said they were not “cookie enough” but the boys thought they were terrific. A nice and simple recipe:

1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ground allspice
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar
2 egg whites
2 c. rolled oats (quick cooking)
2 c. all purpose flour
1 c. unsweetened applesauce
1/2 c. raisins, chopped
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.Grease baking sheet. Mix flour, baking powder, allspice, and salt. Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add egg whites; beat well. Add dry ingredients. Stir in oats, applesauce, and raisins. Mix well. Drop by level tablespoonfuls onto baking sheet.

Bake 11 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on rack. Makes 5 dozen. ( I ended up with one cookie short of 5 dozen)

After the cookies I moved onto Apple Loaf. Another relatively simple one:

1 cup sugar
1 cup applesauce
1/3 cup oil
2 eggs
3 tablespoons milk
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon each salt and nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Mix the first 5 ingredients together. Mix the next 5 ingredients together separately. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix well. Lightly grease a loaf pan. Place mixture in pan and bake for 1 hour.

Topping (if desired):
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix together and sprinkle on top of the loaf before baking. I found that it took more like 90 min to cook through and that the topping browned quicker than it was done cooking.

The last baking project was Raspberry Muffins:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.Mix the dry ingredients together. Mix the egg, butter and milk together and fold into the dry ingredients. Gently fold the raspberries into the other ingredients.

Grease the muffin tins and fill three-quarters full with the batter. Bake for 30 minutes or until done. I used cupcake papers since we are out of Pam and ended up with a dozen and a half.

Tomorrow I am planning on a couple more trays of apple leather and then some sugar cookies with sprinkles. Not enough icing sugar in the house for icing but I am rather sure the kids (and Ken) won’t complain. There has also been a request for pretzels, so I may have to give those a go.

Everyone except Zander had a nap this afternoon so he and Ken spent some time downstairs building houses out of Lego. We are looking into a special Lego event through a homeschooling egroup in October. Not sure on the date on that one yet but am keeping an eye open.

I got my hands on a wonderful picture of Ken’s cousin on her wedding day this month. They got married in the states and I REALLY wanted to go but with our budget it just wasn’t possible. I cannot wait until we can plan out a trip down there to finally meet Ken’s aunt, uncle and their kids (and kid’s kid). I have really enjoyed getting to know Ken’s cousins Ann and Nicole over the internet, but meeting in person would be TERRIFIC! Congrats Nicole and Dean!

D&D again tonight so of course we had to test out the new baking… great reviews… well except for Ken (not a huge surprise). Tomorrow will be busy – school work for the boys, work for Ken and of course government calls (wish us luck) as well as other minor errands. I am hoping tomorrow is the start of something MUCH MUCH better in the saga that is our life.
