Finding the Helpers…

There is a quote circulating the internet by Mr. Rogers in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, it reads as follows:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers–so many caring people in this world.”

From The World According to Mister Rogers (Kindle Locations 645-647).

This is something that was absolutely clear in the early videos released of the tragedy… immediately after the first bomb exploded and people panicked there was an obvious influx of people running back TO the victims… not only do  you see people in uniforms but every day people, ripping down the barriers from the race, throwing aside debris, tearing their clothing for tourniquets.

In the worst moments we see the best of people. In sadness and strife we see people shine. I would love to think that given the situation I would help where I could. It was heart breaking to see mothers with strollers running from the area… people who should be cheering on their loved ones crying in pain and fear. The Boston Marathon is one of the biggest in the world with people from all over the globe running and coming to watch and cheer on. The world has been affected once again.

As we rally around with prayers and what help we can give, for some people there are still loved ones to find and get home. The world we live in can be so scary… the world our children are to inherit so hurting but it gives me hope that surrounding my family are people who would run to assist.
